There’s something magical about New York City in the spring! Eric & Helen, a couple visiting from Los Angeles, brought that magic to life with a surprise proposal on Governors Island, NYC. As a photographer who specializes in documentary-style storytelling, I had the honor of capturing this beautiful moment on both digital and 35mm film. The day was overcast, which turned out to be great—soft, diffused light blanketed the island, bringing out rich tones and lending a cinematic feel to every frame.
Why Governors Island?
Just a quick ferry ride from Manhattan, Governors Island offers some of the most underrated views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Its historic charm, open green spaces, and quiet pathways made it the perfect backdrop for a private and intimate proposal. Even with the cloudy skies, the city felt alive around them—like it was part of the story too.
